Zoom to the Moon – Activity-Based Learning

15th Jan 2026

Primary 4 launched into their new topic, Zoom to the Moon, with an engaging activity-based learning session. During this session, pupils were introduced to a range of practical activities which will be revisited and rotated over the coming weeks.

Pupils took part in role-play as astronauts and mission control staff, recording information in space logbooks and using topic-specific scientific vocabulary. They also acted as researchers on the International Space Station, investigating and recording key facts about the Moon.

Through hands-on small-world play, pupils explored the Moon’s surface and learned that footprints remain visible due to the absence of an atmosphere and weathering. Pupils further developed their scientific understanding of energy and movement by designing and launching paper-cup rockets, learning that elastic potential energy stored in a stretched elastic band is transferred into kinetic energy when released.

The session concluded with a creative art activity where pupils followed an online tutorial to produce realistic astronaut artwork.

The pupils showed great enthusiasm throughout the session, providing an excellent foundation for learning as the Zoom to the Moon topic continues.
